The weather in North America is taking its toll on the stars of the ATP Tour, and it looks like the heat is here to stay.

At the Washington Open, several players struggled with the high temperatures, as a heatwave struck the capital.

Russia’s Daniil Medvedev was one of the big favorites to win the tournament, and started strongly, picking up wins over Reilly Opelka and Yibing Wu en route to the quarterfinals.

It was there that his run came to an end, however, as Medvedev fell to French star Corentin Moutet in three sets, 6-1, 4-6, 4-6.

Now travelling to Toronto for the Canadian Open, Medvedev has been asked whether he is expecting the conditions to be any easier than they were in Washington.

During an interview ahead of the 2025 Canadian Open, Medvedev shared his thoughts on the conditions in Toronto.

“It was hard for everyone in training, but it’s easier here than it was in Washington, so it’s a little nicer,” he said.

There is currently a heat warning issued for Toronto as the temperature is expected to remain in the mid- to high-70s throughout the week.

Sharing his thoughts on the weather, Medvedev revealed what he was thinking about during this year’s Washington Open.

“The heat is hard on everyone. In Washington, we were thinking about this, how many sports are played in such heat where cardio is involved?” he said.

“Probably not many, in football there was the Club World Cup just now, but usually they play in the fall or the spring.

“In tennis, starting with Australia, it can be 35 degrees, which is hard for everyone.”

Reflecting on his quarterfinal defeat to Moutet, Medvedev explained how different players are better suited to certain conditions.

“When I played against [Corentin] Moutet, it seems to me, he’s one of the physically strongest on tour, plus he’s small. Usually when you’re little, it’s easier for you to cope with it,” he said.

“But it was just as hard for him as it was for me.”

Looking to move on from his defeat to Moutet, Medvedev has his sights set on a strong end to the year, but isn’t setting himself any specific goals.

“It’s hard to set specific goals, of course, you want to play well and win matches, but at the same time, I played well in Washington, but maybe I could have played some shots better and won the match,” he said.

“Therefore, the goal is to squeeze the maximum out of myself.

“There is no other way, and that is the main goal; the results will come. Continue trying to do the maximum, maybe even more than I am doing now.”

There’s no doubt Medvedev will give it his all in Toronto, making his ninth career appearance at the Canadian Open.

Historically a hard-court specialist, Medvedev has enjoyed several standout results in Canada over the years, reaching two finals, winning one.

He’s performed better at the Canadian Open than he has at four other Masters 1000 events, although Medvedev did suffer an early exit last time around.

In 2024, Medvedev lost to Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 4-6, 6-1, 2-6, in his opening match at the Canadian Open.

Looking to make amends in 2025, Medvedev will begin his campaign against Czech youngster Dalibor Svrcina, who is competing in his first Masters 1000 main draw.

Medvedev will play Svrcina for a place in the third round of the 2025 Canadian Open on Tuesday, July 29.
