Danielle Collins reveals the big mistake she made early in her career which she regrets now

Danielle Collins shared some insight into what she would change about her tennis career.

The American has been on the WTA tour since 2016 and in that time claimed four titles and reached a career-high ranking of number seven.

She is known for being a fierce competitor and hard hitting baseline player who is producing some of her best tennis in 2024.

In her final season on tour, Collins went on a scintillating 15-match winning streak, which included runs to the Miami and Charleston titles.

She is now ranked 12 in the world and is primed for a strong run at this season’s remaining Grand Slams.

What does Danielle Collins wish was different about her career?

Though Collins is happy with what she has achieved in tennis, the American has rarely played with the consistency she is showing in 2024.

After winning Miami and Charleston she reached her first Italian Open semi-final and is a strong contender for Roland Garros.

But it has not been easy for Collins to find this level of form and she told Andy Roddick on his ‘Served’ podcast what she wishes she had done differently earlier in her career.

“I think there’s been times where I have overtrained. I think there’s times where you know I wasn’t probably doing the right things like taking care of my body,” the 2022 Australian Open runner-up said.

“I just wasn’t aware of what are the things that work for me and what are the things that don’t work for me and it’s been a bit of a learning curve.”

“Now it’s finally clicking for me and it’s pretty late in my career for this to be happening, I wish you know in some ways it would have happened a little bit earlier.”

What is Danielle Collins’ Grand Slam record?

Collins achieved her best result at a major in 2022 when she reached the Australian Open final.

She picked up wins over players such as Elise Mertens, Alize Cornet, and Iga Swiatek to set up a final with home favourite Ash Barty, which she lost 3-6, 6-7.

Back in 2020, she achieved her best result at Roland Garros. She upset former champion Garbine Muguruza and Ons Jabeur to reach the last eight, where compatriot Sofia Kenin claimed a 4-6, 6-4, 0-6 win.

Collins has yet to go past the third round at Wimbledon and reached as far as round four at the US Open. With her form in 2024, those results could change.
