Coco Gauff told what she needs to change ‘immediately’ as the big mistake she keeps making on serve has been spotted

Coco Gauff has discovered a return to form during the clay court season.

Prior to the Madrid Open, she had not reached a final since the United Cup in January, and she appeared to be lacking confidence in her game.

But the 21-year-old reached back-to-back championship matches in Madrid and Rome, beating the likes of French Open champion Iga Swiatek and Olympic gold medallist Qinwen Zheng.

However, despite her improved form, Rennae Stubbs urged Gauff to change one aspect of her game to help further elevate her level of play.

What change does Rennae Stubbs want Coco Gauff to make to her game?

Coco Gauff showed more consistency with her forehand during her Madrid Open and Italian Open campaigns.

She aimed to be more aggressive and used more spin on the ball which has proved successful on the clay this year.

This is still a shot opponents look to target however, as is the serve, which Stubbs has once again told Gauff how to improve.

“I know everyone talks about her grip and her serve. But there is one thing,” the Australian said on her podcast. “If she were ever to listen to this podcast or anyone that knows her, please get her to not go forward on her serve before she throws the ball toss up.

“If you look at her service motion she goes on to the front leg as she is throwing the ball up. There is nowhere to go there. So unless you are serving and you feel really confident, you better hit it well from that point, because you are already coming forward and down on the ball.

“She has got to get the rocking motion. The fact that she is on her front left foot quickly, I am like good luck getting under the ball or getting kick or having a three quarter serve.

“That is one thing but there is a bunch of stuff. The grip is also not a great thing, her elbowed lunges and falls to her left.

“But one of the things I would really change immediately and it would not be that hard to do is to not get on her front leg as quickly as she does. That really hurts her. Particularly with the second serve.”

Following a disappointing 2024 summer in which Gauff failed to go beyond the fourth round at five successive tournaments, changes were made.

Gauff parted ways with coach Brad Gilbert, and replaced him with Matt Daley ahead of the Asian swing in October.

Since their partnership began Gauff won the China Open, WTA Finals and guided Team USA to United Cup glory in January.

As Gauff searches for more silverware, Stubbs comments on her coaching team and acknowledges the work they have done so far.

“I don’t know them well enough. I will be really honest. I don’t know her coaching crew at all,” she said. “I have heard great things about a couple of them.

“They are hard workers and all that sort of stuff. Look, she has just made two back to back finals – so I can’t critique what they are doing.”
