It’s not really been a year to write home about on the WTA Tour for Coco Gauff just yet in 2025.
The poster girl for female tennis in the United States has made a mediocre start to proceedings this year, and ultimately, she is now striving to get her form back on track ahead of the French Open.
Gauff isn’t a player who is typically fazed by playing on clay. In 2022, she reached the final at Roland Garros before losing to Iga Swiatek, with the Polish performer often proving dominant on this surface.
At 21-years-old, the future is bright for Gauff, and she will be hoping to flex her credentials all over again in the coming weeks and add to the nine career titles that she’s claimed so far in her career.
Coco Gauff shares preparation change she’s made ahead of French Open
Fail to prepare, prepare to fail. Gauff is taking that mantra to heart this year, and quite clearly, she’s going to leave no stone unturned in a quest to try and rediscover her best form this year.
Last year, ahead of the first clay tournament of the year at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, Gauff didn’t give herself much time, but on this occasion, she made the transition almost immediately after the Miami Open.
She said in her press conference after beating German player Ella Seidel: “Yeah, I was already on clay right after Miami, basically. I got here early just because I felt like last year I maybe got here too late, but I also played on Wednesday last year.
“Yeah, I think this year I came a little bit early just to give myself more time to adjust to the clay and indoor conditions here, too. So, yeah, I think overall I think it was a good decision.”
Gauff can win the French Open
The youngster does have some pedigree at the French Open, having won the junior title at Roland Garros and right now, there is a sense that form is temporary and class is permanent when it comes to Gauff.
Having not added to her collection of Grand Slam titles since beating Aryna Sabalenka to win the US Open in 2023, she will be desperate to win another major crown in the near future.
Gauff has clearly identified the need to change. After arriving late last year and not giving herself much time for preparation, this time around, she was in Germany on Friday, ready for the event, which got underway on Monday.
As the world’s fourth-best player, the year of 2025 simply hasn’t been fruitful enough for Gauff so far this year and during a busy summer, she will be hoping to truly start showcasing her top form once more.
