Coco Gauff and Amanda Anisimova are among the American women impressing at this year’s Australian Open.

Gauff is already into the quarterfinals of the first Grand Slam of the season, with Anisimova hoping to join her WTA rival shortly.

She has just knocked fellow American Peyton Stearns out of the Australian Open, and now takes on Wang Xinyu in Melbourne.

If Anisimova wins that match, half of the quarterfinalists at the hard-court tournament will be players from the USA.

Coco Gauff wants Amanda Anisimova to win her next Australian Open match

After her fourth round win over Karolina Muchova, Gauff was asked if she was aware of the impressive statistic, and indeed why it might be the case.

She replied: “Yeah, I’m definitely aware of it, because you see them every day, and we’re all rooting for each other. I don’t know. I think it’s cool.

“I think I was mainly aware of it last year when we were at the WTA Finals. I think it was four out of the eight, if I’m not mistaken, were Americans.

“I don’t know what’s in the water, but I think we have a strong, like, tennis identity in United States. So I think that just causes the natural call to produce great players.

“Also, I think when you have friends and people you practice with being at a high level, if you’re not at that level yet, you know that you can reach there.

“Yeah, it’s really cool to see all of us doing well. Yeah, for sure, I think Jess [Pegula] and Maddie [Keys] play, so they’ll be for sure one, and hopefully Amanda can win and we can keep this up.”

Coco Gauff versus Iva Jovic blockbuster now on the cards

While Gauff is keen to see Anisimova progress, she’s well aware that one of Pegula or Keys will shortly exit the tournament.

The two American WTA stars will meet in the fourth round at Rod Laver Arena, the venue where Keys beat Aryna Sabalenka to clinch the title in 2025.

Another potential all-American clash could then take place later in that half of the draw, with Anisimova meeting the winner of Pegula versus Keys if she beats Wang.

And a similar scenario could play out with Gauff, who is in the same half of the draw as American teenage sensation Iva Jovic.

The two could meet in the semifinals, although Jovic does have the unenviable task of first trying to get past world number one Aryna Sabalenka.

American women enjoyed fantastic Grand Slam success in 2025, with Gauff winning the French Open after Keys’ triumph in Melbourne.

Anisimova then fell just short of repeating that success on two occasions, losing the finals of Wimbledon and the US Open.
