Coco Gauff welcomes the rule change regarding video review technology for the 2024 US Open.
The 20-year-old is in New York preparing to defend the title she won in stunning fashion a year ago.
Gauff is not in the best form but the World number there has been working extremely hard in training over the past week to rediscover her best game.
Coco Gauff will take to the court on Monday with the thousands of home fans cheering her on as she bids to become the first player since Serena Williams to win back-to-back US Open titles.
What has Coco Gauff said about the US Open rule change?
The US Open has made several changes to the tournament this season, one of which concerns late night matches.
The tournament has announced that if the second match of the evening session on Arthur Ashe or the last match on court Louis Armstrong has not commenced by 11:15 p.m. ET, the match referee can decide if they wish to move the match to the following day.
Gauff commented on this during her pre-tournament press conference, and she agrees with the decision.
“I have never actually had a super late finish just because I have been lucky that the match would go super fast,” Gauff said. “But I do think that finishing late can really ruin your tournament, especially on the guy’s side.
“If they are going on at 11 or 12, maybe the longest a women’s match can go is two or three hours, but the men’s can go five. I think I heard at the US Open that if you are going to start after 11 they are going to move your court, so I think that is a really good start.
“You may win the match that day but your sleep schedule is completely messed up for the rest of the tournament so it does, but that person is at a disadvantage.
“With that new policy I think that’s the best way to address it and we won’t know until we test a couple of things but that’s a good way to start.”
Who is Coco Gauff playing against at the US Open?
Gauff will commence her US Open title defence against French player Varvara Gracheva.
The 24-year-old successfully qualified for the main draw of the Cincinnati Masters and reached the second round where she was beaten by World number one Iga Swiatek.
The pair have played just once before, and that was in Auckland back in January. Gauff thrashed Gracheva 6-1, 6-1 in the quarter-finals on the way to winning her only title of the year so far.
But on Monday the pair will clash in a far different environment when Gauff attempts to win the second Grand Slam of her career at the US Open.
