Coco Gauff has yet to reach a final on the WTA Tour in 2025, but that could change this week in Madrid.

The American star began her tournament with a big win, as Gauff beat Dayana Yastremska, 0-6, 6-2, 7-5 in her opening match.

Wins over Ann Li and Belinda Bencic followed, as the 21-year-old made her way through to the Madrid Open quarterfinals.

There she met Russia’s Mirra Andreeva, who was searching for her first career win over Gauff one day after her 18th birthday.

Unwilling to give the teenager a birthday ‘gift’, Gauff took control of proceedings after saving set points in the first, winning 7-5, 6-1.

Speaking after the match, the WTA Tour’s number four-ranked player rated her performance out of ten.

After beating Andreeva in straight sets, Gauff was asked to rate her performance out of ten during her on-court interview.

“Probably like a nine,” she said.

“I think I played really well today, I was able to stay really composed even when facing those set points, so really happy with how I played today.”

Gauff was relentless against Andreeva, carving out 16 break points, of which she converted five.

The American then explained how battling back from 0-6 down in her opening match against Yastremska, ‘woke’ her up in Madrid.

“I had that tough match in the first round, and even though it was tough, it prepared me, woke me up,” said Gauff.

“I was able to keep going better, and hopefully I can keep going all the way to the end.”

This year’s Madrid Open was disrupted earlier this week when the nation experienced a power outage.

Gauff had just won her third-round match against Bencic when the blackout cut her post-match interview short, as she now recalls what happened on a day she’ll ‘never forget’.

“Honestly, we were stuck here, because all the traffic lights weren’t working, so the transportation wasn’t safe,” she said.

“Once the police got on the roads to direct traffic, it took like two hours to go four miles, then we got out and walked the last mile.

“Honestly the day went by fast between waiting here, spending the day in the dark then around 9 PM the power came on in our hotel, and at that point it was time to turn off the lights to go to sleep.

“It was a memorable experience and something I’ll never forget.”

Gauff will now get set to take on world number two Iga Swiatek, who beat Madison Keys in her quarterfinal match.

She may trail the head-to-head by some distance, but the momentum is firmly with Gauff, who has won their previous two matches.

Gauff beat Swiatek at the United Cup earlier this year, having done the same a few months earlier at the WTA Finals.

The world number four would no doubt love to secure her fourth career win over Swiatek when they face off in the semi-finals of the Madrid Open.

Gauff and Swiatek will battle it out for a place in the 2025 Madrid Open final on Thursday, May 1.
