Coco Gauff is one step closer to claiming her second title of the season at the Wuhan Open.

Gauff earned a straight-sets win over Laura Siegemund in an hour and a half, 6-3, 6-0, to book her place in the semifinals of the WTA 1000 event.

The US star has been dominant throughout her Wuhan campaign so far, and has yet to drop a set over three matches.

With her triumph over Siegemund, Gauff has just surpassed both Serena and Venus Williams to set an incredible WTA record.

Coco Gauff surpasses the Williams sisters with latest victory

The 21-year-old will now become the American with the most semifinal appearances at WTA 1000 events before turning 22, since the introduction of the format in 1990.

With 12, her total is now greater than that of the Williams sisters, who both featured in the final four at the level 11 times before their 22nd birthday.

Only Maria Sharapova and Martina Hingis have a higher tally than Gauff, with 15 and 33 to their names, respectively.

The two-time major champion will turn 22 in March, meaning she has time to match Sharapova, but it will be impossible for her to catch Hingis.

Gauff has yet to add to her WTA 1000 title tally in 2025, but has come close on two occasions.

After short-lived campaigns in Doha, Dubai, Indian Wells and Miami, she made the final of both the Madrid Open and the Italian Open.

She lost in straight sets in both of the clay-court championship matches, suffering defeat to Aryna Sabalenka in Madrid and home hope Jasmine Paolini in Rome.

Gauff’s semifinal finish in Beijing marked her next-best result at a WTA 1000 tournament, where she ultimately bowed out to Amanda Anisimova.
