The stage is set and the Olympics in Paris are set to get underway with the opening ceremony to take place on Friday.

For tennis players, the race is on to claim a gold medal and this year that prize will be like the fifth major that stars will compete for.

Coco Gauff is a female athlete who comes into this tournament looking to make her mark on the event for the first time.

The 20-year-old will have some fond memories of playing at Roland Garros after reaching the final there in 2022 before losing to Iga Swiatek.

This year, whether she wins a medal at the Olympics or not, the games will provide at least one happy memory for the Atlanta-born star.

Coco Gauff to make American history at Paris Olympics

This is going to be a truly special moment for Gauff and her family as she becomes the youngest flag bearer in American history at the Olympics.

She will take centre stage during the opening parade with LeBron James taking the mantle from a male perspective.

It’s claimed by Today that the pair were chosen following a vote of fellow Team USA athletes in discussion with the TEAM USA Athletes’ Commission.

Gauff is the number two player in world tennis right now and she will become the first US tennis player to be a flag bearer for the USA.

This is rather special and serves to highlight just how popular tennis remains in the United States, despite it not being considered one of the mainstream sports.

Gauff is a trailblazer for female athletes

This is quite amazing for the talented player and it should give her real confidence when she starts to play at the Olympics.

The draw hasn’t been made just yet but there won’t be many players who want to face Gauff in the opening round at Roland Garros.

Gauff is an inspirational athlete and she looks set to add to the one Grand Slam title she’s won as her career progresses further.

She is an inspiration to female tennis and also to women in sport and at 20-years-old she really is someone who her peers can already look up to.

Gauff is set for many more amazing moments in her career but this will surely sit close to the top when she calls time on things and her playing days are over.
