Coco Gauff secured a second consecutive China Open semi-final appearance after her record-breaking win over Yuliia Starodubtseva.

Gauff has been surprised by her China Open run, with the American taking part in her first tournament since parting ways with Brad Gilbert.

She is now on a winning run under new coach Matt Daly, with Gauff also beating Clara Burel, Katie Boulter and Naomi Osaka in Beijing.

Gauff reached out to Osaka after the latter retired from their China Open round of 16 match, which saw the former move into the quarter-finals.

Ukrainian qualifier Starodubtseva was up next, with Gauff needing to come from behind to beat her 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Coco Gauff breaks personal record in China Open quarter-final win

The 20-year-old is now into her third WTA-1000 semi-final of the year, where she will take on Paula Badosa.

Her latest win represents a fine personal record, with Gauff securing multiple wins (two) from a set down at a single WTA-1000 event for the first time in her career, as per OptaAce.

What is the head-to-head record between Coco Gauff and Paula Badosa?

Gauff will be full of confidence after her latest comeback win, with the American now eyeing a first final since she won the ASB Classic in Auckland at the start of the year.

But there is also reason for the youngster to be somewhat apprehensive, primarily given that she fell at this stage of the 2023 China Open.

Gauff did, however, lose to eventual champion Iga Swiatek, with the world number one not taking part this year due to personal reasons.

But in other worrying news for the American, Badosa leads her 3-2 in head-to-heads, although Gauff did win their most recent clash in Rome.

Even with a win over the China Open 15th seed, victory in Beijing will be difficult given that top seed Aryna Sabalenka remains in the competition, fresh from her US Open title.
