Coco Gauff is one of tennis’ brightest and most liked individuals, but has been enduring a tough period of late.
After all, struggles with her serve and forehand have completely crippled her game, leaving her powerless against the very best players in the world.
Her ability to keep picking up wins is a testament to her never-say-die attitude, but that can only get her so far.
Coco Gauff’s latest exclamation during her Dubai Open semifinal against Elina Svitolina suggests that her lack of improvement in these areas is starting to really impact her.
Coco Gauff makes frustrated claim mid-match
What’s even more frustrating for the American superstar is the fact that, in an effort to remedy the situation, Gauff hired Gavin MacMillan to her coaching staff back in September of last year.
A biomechanics coach, he was expected to completely reengineer these shots and turn her into a consistent threat once again.
Are you worried about Coco Gauff in 2026?
It’s clear that he has yet to complete his mission, and after serving another double fault against Svitolina, the 21-year-old made a rather telling claim.
She shouted at her coaching box: “I’ve been doing everything you’ve wanted for the last 6 months, and it’s not getting any better.”
It’s hard to argue with her.
Gavin MacMillan has not improved Coco Gauff at all
Gauff’s frustrations are more than valid, as she has seemingly made no visible improvement in either her serve or her forehand.
In fact, it could be argued that she has actually regressed as a player, with MacMillan unable to stop the tide.
She was certainly a better player two years ago than she is now, with a forehand that routinely misfires, and a serve that leaks double faults at crucial moments.
Where will Coco Gauff be ranked at the end of the 2026 season?
MacMillan was brought in to solve those two key issues, and in six months’ time, has been unable to make any progress with Gauff.
With these latest comments, the writing might be on the wall for his biomechanics coach.
