Coco Gauff advanced to the fourth round of the Australian Open for the second year running with a dominant win over Leylah Fernandez.

With the first week of the Australian Open nearing a close, several players look like real contenders for the title.

Gauff is certainly one of them, having advanced to the fourth round without dropping a single set.

The American number one started the tournament with a huge win, as Gauff beat Sofia Kenin, a former champion in Australia, 6-3, 6-3.

Gauff then beat Brit, Jodie Burrage, and Fernandez to secure her spot in the fourth round of the 2025 Australian Open.

Jubilant after a big win, the WTA star now admits that she may have slightly embarrassed herself during her post-match interview.

During her post-match interview, Gauff was asked whether her tournament outfit is as comfortable as it is stylish.

“It’s definitely comfortable,” she said.

“A lot of people were wondering how I use the bathroom in it, so I posted a video on Instagram.

“Not actually demonstrating but you get the idea.”

Her answer got the crowd on Margaret Court Arena laughing before she quickly apologized for oversharing.

“Okay that was TMI [too much information], I’m sorry guys,” she said.

The 20-year-old star later took to social media, referencing her ‘moment’ earlier on Friday.

“Definitely embarrassed myself with my on-court interview today,” she said on X.

Gauff later posted on her Instagram story once again, apologizing for what she said in the interview.

“I yap too much, I need to shut up,” she said.

“I’m sorry this was embarrassing.”

Coco Gauff looks forward to the second week of the Australian Open

Following her win over Fernandez, Gauff booked her place in the last 16, where she will come up against Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic on Sunday.

Ever present on social media, the American took to Instagram ahead of her next match.

“Into the second week,” she said.

Bencic beat an injured Naomi Osaka in the third round, as she advanced to the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time since returning from maternity leave.

Gauff and Bencic have played each other twice on the WTA Tour, with the head-to-head level at 1-1.

The American star lost their first meeting back in 2021, as Bencic qualified for the final of the Adelaide 500 event with a three sets win.

Two years later, it was Gauff’s turn to take the win, however, as she overwhelmed the Swiss star at the Washington Open.

With a 6-1, 6-2, win, Gauff made her way into the semi-finals, where she went on to take home her fourth WTA singles title.

She’ll have to work hard to beat Bencic this time around, but if she does, she’ll be able to look forward to some more tough battles in the second week.

An Australian Open semi-final rematch against Aryna Sabalenka could well be on the cards next week, after Gauff came up short against the Belarussian at the same stage last year.

Similarly, the Polish second seed will likely be tough to beat should they both reach the final, although Gauff did beat Iga Swiatek recently at the United Cup.

She won’t want to get too far ahead of herself, however, and will first focus on taking down Bencic in the fourth round, on Sunday, January 19.
