The women’s singles event at Roland Garros has already seen some big results and shocking upsets as it enters the third round.

In round one, four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka lost to Paula Badosa, while ninth seed Emma Navarro crashed out of the tournament in straight sets.

Defending champion Iga Swiatek has got off to a strong start, winning her first two matches against Rebecca Sramkova and Emma Raducanu comfortably.

World number one Aryna Sabalenka has also hit the ground running in Paris, dropping just five games en route to the third round.

There’s one star, however, who seven-time French Open champion Chris Evert has already written off just five days into the main draw.

Chris Evert and Laura Robson in agreement over Jessica Pegula’s chances at Roland Garros

Speaking on TNT Sports, former British star Laura Robson gave her verdict on world number three Jessica Pegula.

She said: “I kind of feel like she is not in the mix for me. Considering the clay season she has had, yes, she is in the third round, but it just looks like she is a bit low energy on the court at the moment.”

Evert responded: “I have a lot of respect for Jessie Pegula’s game. She has done great to reach the finals of the US Open. But I agree with you 100% Laura.

“I don’t see the fire in her eyes, and she is low energy. She is very solid and dependable, but she doesn’t have that one big shot that can win free points for her, and I think that hurts her.

“All the other top players do have those shots,” said the American legend.

Jessica Pegula’s up-and-down 2025 clay-court season

Pegula emerged victorious in the first tournament of her clay-court season, winning the Charleston Open, but has struggled to get it going on the dirt since then.

She lost in the quarter-final of the Stuttgart Open, before suffering third-round exits at both the Madrid Open and the Italian Open.

The American was then defeated in her opening match in Strasbourg, losing to Anna Kalinskaya over three sets.

Despite a largely underwhelming clay swing for Pegula, she has earned two victories at Roland Garros so far, beating Anca Todoni and Ann Li to advance to the third round.

Her next opponent is former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova, who she trails in the head-to-head 0-1.
