Casper Ruud narrowly missed out on a maiden Grand Slam title, competing in the new-look US Open mixed doubles event.
Partnering with six-time major champion Iga Swiatek, the Norwegian looked in good shape to win the title in New York, taking down the number-one seeds Jessica Pegula and Jack Draper in the semis.
Standing between them and the title were the mixed doubles specialists, Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori, who won the US Open title in 2024.

After the Italian pair won the first set 6-3, Ruud and Swiatek fought back, taking the second 7-5, as the two teams went the distance on Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Eventually, it was Errani and Vavassori who prevailed, winning 10-6 in the match tiebreaker, defending their US Open mixed doubles title.
Reacting to his fourth career Grand Slam final defeat, Ruud took to social media to share his thoughts.
Casper Ruud hints at future mixed doubles return alongside Iga Swiatek
On Instagram, Ruud was quick to congratulate the now two-time US Open mixed doubles champions.
“What an incredible couple of days with amazing crowds,” he said.
“Congrats to the champs – it was such a thrill, US Open.”
Ruud then hinted at a potential return to mixed doubles in the future alongside the Polish world number two.

“Big thanks to my great partner, Iga Swiatek. Feel free to text me again if you ever feel like playing (wink face emoji).”
Earlier in the tournament, Ruud and Swiatek had joked about who ‘made the first move’ in organizing their doubles entry, with both players claiming it was the other who texted first.
Having come so close to lifting the title at Flushing Meadows in 2025, it wouldn’t come as too much of a surprise to see both players fire off some texts before next year’s tournament, for another shot at US Open glory.
Unfortunately for Ruud, while his and Swiatek’s defeat to Vavassori and Errani probably wasn’t the most heartbreaking of his career, he remains Slam-less, and now has a disappointing 0-4 record in major finals.

The world number 12 would love nothing more than to win the singles tournament in New York and finally get his hands on a Grand Slam trophy.
He will play his opening match on Sunday, August 24, against Austria’s Sebastian Ofner.
Ruud isn’t the only player without a Slam who narrowly missed out in the mixed doubles event, as a losing semifinalist has also taken to social media to comment on her efforts.
Danielle Collins reflects on ‘full circle moment’ in US Open mixed doubles
The American team of Danielle Collins and Christian Harrison entered as last-minute replacements for Jannik Sinner and Katerina Siniakova, when the Italian was struck down with an illness.
Making the most of their call-up, Collins and Harrison made an impressive run through to the semifinals, where they fell to the defending champions in straight sets, 2-4, 2-4.
In the aftermath of her semifinal defeat, Collins took to social media, reflecting on a ‘full circle moment’ in New York.
“For me, some of my best tennis memories are playing under the lights in Arthur Ashe [Stadium],” she said.
“What a full circle moment getting to play mixed with Christian Harrison and making it to the semifinals together.
“There’s nothing like competing in the biggest tennis stadium in the world, and there not being one empty seat in the stands. This is what we play for!
“Thank you, Christian, for being my doubles partner and always having my back.
“Congrats to Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori on another one.”
The 31-year-old will now turn her attention to the singles event, her last of the 2025 season.
Collins has been managing a back issue recently and will rest up before making the trip to Australia at the beginning of 2026.
Looking to finish her season on a high note, Collins will kick off her US Open campaign in the first round against Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian on Monday, August 25.
