Casper Ruud’s campaign at the Miami Open was brought to an abrupt end in the second round with a shocking upset defeat to Ethan Quinn.

The American home hope, aged 22, knocked out Hubert Hurkacz in the first round, and has now beaten 11th seed Ruud in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6.

Quinn has already guaranteed his best finish in an ATP Masters 1000 tournament, and will have the chance to go one step further against Jiri Lehecka in round three.

Who are you backing to complete the sunshine double?

Or do you think both Sabalenka and Sinner will win the Miami Open?

For Ruud, however, the loss marks another early exit at a tour-level competition, with the Norwegian having reached just one quarterfinal all season.

His sole quarterfinal finish came at the Delray Beach Open, where he only needed to win one match to reach the last eight.

“Thanks for now @miamiopen. See you next time.”

Following the conclusion of the Sunshine Double in Miami, the ATP Tour will get its clay season underway, with the first three tournaments on the surface taking place in Houston, Marrakech and Bucharest.

The first ATP Masters 1000 event of the clay swing will be the Monte-Carlo Masters, which gets started in early April.

Ethan Quinn’s reaction to beating Casper Ruud in Miami

Quinn sealed his victory over Ruud in a nervy tiebreak, in which he emerged triumphant 9-7.

“It was stressful, stressful times,” said Quinn in his on-court interview. “I think the last few matches I’ve played, I think I’ve now won six or seven breakers in a row.

“So, it’s just that confidence in those breakers, knowing that my stuff is good enough.

“Serving a really high percentage, making a lot of first serves that are winning free points, makes it a lot easier, that’s for sure.

“I can play a little bit looser on my return points, be able to go for a bigger shot. I think that just worked out for me today. I played bold…  and I earned it.”

Quinn, currently ranked 56th in the world, is bidding to claim his first ATP title in Miami.
