Caroline Garcia has reacted to recent reports downplaying Novak Djokovic’s ability to continue competing at the top level.

The men’s world number one was knocked out of the Australian Open semi-finals by the eventual winner Jannik Sinner in emphatic fashion.

Such dominance from the 22-year-old has led many to suggest that a new era is set to be ushered in, leaving the 36-year-old behind; a story we have heard before, that never comes to fruition.

This has sparked outrage from Djokovic’s sprawling fanbase, with Garcia one high-profile name to laugh off that notion.

But what exactly did she say in defence of the Serbian? Let’s take a closer look…

What Carolina Garcia said about Novak Djokovic

Fresh off the back of her own underwhelming Australian Open run, the French tennis player has been vocal about her admiration for Djokovic.

Showcasing the fluctuating highs and the lows that have plagued her entire career, a near-flawless first-round showing against Naomi Osaka was marred by the subsequent straight sets loss in the next round to world number 51 Magdalena Frech.

A deeper doubles run rescued some pride, but it was a tough couple of weeks in Melbourne for the 30-year-old.

For Djokovic however, it marked yet another Grand Slam semi-final, in which he had impressed before being dumped out by Sinner.

It was his fine performances in the run-up to that match, plus everything he has done to prove doubters wrong throughout his entire career, that likely spurred Garcia to write: ‘I was scrolling a bit and basically Djokovic was the GOAT 2 weeks ago, still so young, moving so well beyond of this age, going for an other Slam once again, a true inspiration. And now he is too old, we are in a complete new era, he is finished for tennis … this is funny’.

Novak Djokovic is far from finished

As Garcia suggests, this is a player that people should write off at their own peril.

So many times have players threatened to break through and snag his crown, and now most have faded into obscurity whilst he only improves with age.

It is astounding how he has continued to reach new levels at the age of 36, and if claiming three Grand Slam titles and losing in the final of the other is not enough for some people then so be it. And that is without mentioning his success in the ATP Finals too.

Those fans will never be impressed, because what he accomplished in 2023 was remarkable and will likely seldom be matched by someone his age.

Nick Kyrgios even put him on a pedestal above Roger Federer, such is his talent and longevity.

Just when Djokovic is least expected to succeed is when he often hits his peak, and with Roland Garros just a few months away, the Serbian superstar will have his eyes set on proving the doubters wrong again as he continues to add to his legendary legacy.
