Carlos Moya spoke out on his tennis future amid Rafael Nadal’s retirement.

The 1998 French Open winner has coached the 38-year-old since he joined the team in 2016.

He, like many others, was emotional when Nadal played his final event of his career, the Davis Cup finals.

Following Spain’s defeat to The Netherlands in the Davis Cup quarter-finals, Nadal’s career is now over and therefore Moya is no longer his coach.

Will Carlos Moya coach again after Rafael Nadal’s retirement?

Rafael Nadal is the first player Carlos Moya coached on the ATP Tour. It was a match in heaven, given both men are from Mallorca and Nadal looked up to the 48-year-old as a youngster.

They enjoyed a successful partnership in the latter part of Nadal’s career and he was right by his side when the 22-time Grand Slam winner retired from tennis.

It remains to be seen if or when Moya will be back on the circuit coaching, but it will not be anytime soon.

“It’s been eight years with Rafa… you feel tired and empty, it wouldn’t be honest to start with someone now, I don’t have the energy,” the 2004 French Open winner told Spanish radio station El Partidazo de COPE.

“Leaving Rafa requires a period of mourning on my part, there is an important emotional connection.”

How many Grand Slams did Rafael Nadal win with Carlos Moya as his coach?

By the start of the 2017 season, Moya was a full-fledged member of Nadal’s coaching team, and the sole coach after his Uncle Toni Nadal stepped down. Together the pair won six Grand Slam titles.

Nadal won two Grand Slams in 2017, his 10th French Open and his third US Open title and regained the World number ranking after two difficult seasons in 2015 and 2016, where he did not win a major.

Nadal claimed another French Open in 2018, before adding two more in 2019, once again the Roland Garros and US Open double.

The Spaniard faced the difficult task of defending his French Open crown later in the year and in colder conditions in 2020. But Nadal did so emphatically, without dropping a set and defeating Novak Djokovic in straight sets in the final.

The final two Grand Slams of Nadal’s career came in 2022, first at the Australian Open, which saw him surpass Roger Federer’s major haul of 20 Grand Slams.

He added to his haul with his 14th French Open, which is the final title win of Nadal’s illustrious career.
