The 2025 Shanghai Masters has seen some big results already in the first three rounds.

Sixth seed Ben Shelton’s return to tour-level action ended abruptly at the ATP 1000 event after suffering a shocking defeat to David Goffin in his opening match.

In round three, world number four Taylor Fritz also bowed out in Shanghai, losing to Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in straight sets.

With both Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner withdrawing from the tournament due to physical issues, the draw is wide open for several stars, including one player who has just matched one of the world number one’s season records.

Nuno Borges matches Carlos Alcaraz’s 2025 record in Shanghai

With his victory over home hope, Shang Juncheng, Nuno Borges booked his spot in the fourth round of a Masters 1000 competition for the first time in his career.

The Portuguese star has yet to drop a set in his Shanghai campaign, having earned hard-fought wins against Botic van de Zandschulp and Aleksandar Vukic.

He triumphed over Shang after clinching the third set, marking the 15th time he has won a tour-level match in the decider this year.

His impressive tally is joint-first among all ATP players in 2025, matching the total of Alcaraz.

Nuno Borges says he ‘wants more’ after third victory in Shanghai

In his on-court interview after beating Shang, Borges said: “I’m really happy with my performance.

“Very tough conditions, a lot of humidity, and I had to manage it from start to finish. Overall, I served very well, and managed to make the difference at the end.

“There was a lot on the line, but I’m very happy with the way I played and fought. It’s a very important win for me, I had never reached this stage before, and I want more.”

Borges will face Alex de Minaur in the next round, whom he has never played before on the ATP Tour.
