Carlos Alcaraz and Juan Carlos Ferrero’s split earlier this week has naturally dominated the tennis headlines over the past few days.
After all, it marked one of the most shocking dissolutions in recent memory, with the 22-year-old parting ways with the coach who nurtured him into the world number one that he currently is.
However, sport can be a ruthless enterprise, and tennis is no different.
That is, despite the reasons why Alcaraz and Ferrero split still remaining unclear.
Who would you like to see coach Carlos Alcaraz next?
Some cite financial causes, whilst others argue it was commitment-based.
Given the radio silence from all involved, it is anybody’s guess.
Samuel Lopez breaks the silence after Juan Carlos Ferrero split
However, despite this inability to address the overwhelming elephant in the room, Carlos Alcaraz has continued to work during the off-season.
After all, despite being forced to go without his long-time mentor, the show simply must go on for the six-time Grand Slam champion.
Who would you like to see Juan Carlos Ferrero coach next?
Samuel Lopez is due to take the reins as the main coach leading Alcaraz’s continued development, with the Spaniard having finally broken his silence since taking up this role.
Taking to Instagram, he wrote: “Preseason first week completed. After passing the medical checkup we started off with good sensations, hard work, and commitment.
“We continue to train with enthusiasm, ambition, and unity, focused on growing day by day and continuing to make history in this sport.”
Could Carlos Alcaraz re-hire Juan Carlos Ferrero?
Whilst there’s been nothing to suggest a reunion might be on the cards, it’d be foolish to rule out Alcaraz re-hiring Ferrero at some point in the future.
After all, we’ve seen it happen many times before in tennis, and both their parting messages on social media seemed to outline the regret and sadness felt as a result of this decision.

If Jannik Sinner could convince Darren Cahill to stick around with him on tour for another season, Alcaraz might look to hopefully do the same.
After all, they boast a relationship that has guaranteed success, nurturing him from a talented 15-year-old into the world’s best player.
There is nothing concrete yet, but should things go south in 2026, Alcaraz might have to return to Ferrero with an offer he can’t refuse.
