Carlos Alcaraz and Juan Carlos Ferrero’s public dissolution remains one of the most shocking things to have happened in tennis in recent memory.
After all, seldom does a player split with their coach after a year like the one they have enjoyed.
During 2025, the 22-year-old reclaimed the world number one spot, aided by adding two more Grand Slam titles to his now-sprawling trophy cabinet.
However, for reasons that remain unconfirmed by the player and his team, their relationship is over.

This sent the tennis world into a frenzy, although one notable name has now emerged to try to justify the decision.
Why Carlos Alcaraz has made a smart move splitting with Juan Carlos Ferrero
That man is Giles Cervara, who is likely most renowned for his work coaching former world number one and Grand Slam champion Daniil Medvedev.
Speaking to L’Equipe, he argued why this dissolution could be a good thing for Carlos Alcaraz, noting: “I have noticed that these types of champions are able to perceive when they need something different, or more, to continue progressing, and if that is the case, it is very smart that Carlos continues to improve.

“I think, whether it’s the player or the coach, and this is what I experienced with Daniil (Medvedev), that, at some point, it is important to be able to intuit it in advance so that it is not too late and ensure that the change is made for the right reasons, to continue progressing.
“Now, only time will tell if this decision is the right one. Nothing prevents us from thinking that he could return to Juan Carlos Ferrero if he wins less.”
The reasons behind Alcaraz’s split from Ferrero have been revealed, although neither party has given their version of events just yet.
