Carlos Alcaraz praised for what he did to Alexander Zverev straight after Team Europe lost the Laver Cup

Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev were unable to secure victory for Team Europe at the Laver Cup.

Alcaraz lost to Taylor Fritz in straight sets, but did contribute seven points to Team Europe after a win over Francisco Cerundolo and two doubles victories.

That was not the case for Alexander Zverev, who lost to both Alex de Minaur and Fritz in San Francisco.

The defeat to Fritz was particularly notable, as it meant that Team World had secured the Laver Cup title.

Zverev does not enjoy playing Fritz, and it is clear to see why after losing his sixth consecutive match against the American.

After being unable to help Team Europe retain the Laver Cup, Zverev appeared very dejected as he sat back down on the bench.

However, he was not left alone in his disappointment, as Alcaraz was spotted comforting his Team Europe teammate.

This prompted a lot of praise for Alcaraz, including from Portuguese tennis journalist Jose Morgado.

In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), Morgado wrote, “Great touch from Carlos.”

Alcaraz is often called one of the nicest ATP players by his peers, and it seems like tennis fans feel the same way after watching him show support to Zverev.

One person wrote, “Most likeable guy on tour for a reason.”

Another social media user added, “You win as a team, you lose as a team. Everyone knows how much Zverev loves the Laver Cup but he didn’t help his team to play whilst struggling with back issues.”

It is clear to see just how much of a valuable member to Team Europe Alcaraz is, not just as a player, but also as a support system.

Who were the best and worst performers at the Laver Cup this year?

The scoring system at the Laver Cup is different to any other tournament, with one point awarded for matches on the first day, two on the second and three on the third.

Alcaraz made history at the Laver Cup last year after contributing eight points, and he was not far off that total in 2025 after winning seven of Team Europe’s nine points, four of which were in doubles competition.

The only other player to contribute seven points was Team World’s De Minaur, who won all three of his matches at the Laver Cup this year.

De Minaur is one of two players to have a 100% record at the 2025 Laver Cup, with highly praised teenager Joao Fonseca the other.

There were also four players who were winless at the Laver Cup this year, with Flavio Cobolli, Holger Rune and Reilly Opelka joining Zverev in this unwanted record.

This is the first time that this has happened to Zverev, who has contributed more points than anyone else at the Laver Cup.

Team World have now won their third Laver Cup, with next year’s competition heading back to Europe to take place at The O2 Arena in London.
