Carlos Alcaraz made history after reaching his very first French Open final.
The Spaniard overcame some adversity to claim a 2-6 6-3 3-6 6-4 6-3 victory over rival Jannik Sinner to advance to Sunday’s championship match.
The players struggled with cramp at times and both had moments in their match when the momentum was firmly in their corner.
But in the closing stages of set four and the deciding frame both players managed to produce a high level of tennis at the same time.
But ultimately it was the Spaniard who outlasted the soon-to-be new World number one in their ninth meeting against one another.
How did Carlos Alcaraz make history by winning the French Open?
By defeating Sinner for the fifth time in his career Alcaraz advanced to the final of the clay court major.
This goes with the finals appearances he made at the 2022 US Open and the 2023 Wimbledon Championships, both of which he won.
By reaching the championship game in Paris, Alcaraz, 21, became the first player in the Open Era to make Grand Slam finals on hard courts, grass courts and clay courts before turning 22. This is something that even the great Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic did not manage.
Alcaraz defeated Casper Ruud to win his first major at the US Open, before winning a five-set epic at Wimbledon against Djokovic and ending his 10-year winning unbeaten run on Centre Court. The Spaniard will take on either Ruud or Alexander Zverev in Sunday’s Roland Garros final.

Alcaraz wins a four-hour five set battle at the French Open
In the French Open semi-final Sinner made a stronger start and stormed ahead after winning the first set 6-2, before Alcaraz raised his game to level the match.
But in set three the Australian Open champion shortened the points to great effect as he regained the lead, but the third seed would not be denied.
The Spaniard began to play with more width and shape which took his opponent off balance and he grabbed the fourth set by breaking Sinner’s serve when he attempted to stay in it.
With all the momentum and Sinner looking fatigued, Alcaraz broke serve in the second game of the deciding set and held serve for the remainder of the match to seal a famous win.
