Carlos Alcaraz is heading into 2026 with one clear, outstanding goal, and he’s not been afraid of voicing it.

After all, his entire career thus far has been one relentless, fruitful search for history, and he is blazing a path that few others of his age have ever managed.

However, despite all the successes he has already enjoyed, one outstanding trophy remains absent from his sprawling collection: The Australian Open.

Upon winning that event, he will have completed the career Grand Slam and can go about his career with a renewed sense of freedom regarding tournaments of this magnitude.

Why do you think Carlos Alcaraz has struggled at the Australian Open in the past?

Speaking ahead of his return to Melbourne just next month, Carlos Alcaraz has sought to explain why it remains the only major he has not yet won.

Carlos Alcaraz shares his hopes for the 2026 Australian Open

In a conversation relayed by Cope Murcia, after the Spaniard was gifted an award for being the best athlete from the region of Murcia, he was asked about his expectations heading back to Australia.

Naturally, he is full of hope, and first outlined his wider goals for 2026: “I’m starting my preseason now, and I’m really excited to begin – to work well and prepare myself physically and mentally as best as possible.

“My objective for 2026 is Australia, and the good and the bad thing is that it’s the first tournament of the year. We’ll try to be as ready and as well prepared as possible to show a good level and hopefully achieve the goal we want.”

Then, touching more specifically on the Australian Open and why he has struggled to secure silverware, he added: “I think because it’s the first tournament of the year. It’s about getting into rhythm. It’s not that it doesn’t suit me; it’s just that some players do better there, or when we’ve competed, it’s come down to small details.

“I think I’ve played very good tennis in Australia; I’ve just missed that final step to go further. I believe and hope this year will be different.”

Alcaraz has revealed that winning the Australian Open remains his biggest goal, as it would make him the youngest ever to complete that career Grand Slam.

Carlos Alcaraz has already proven why he can win the Australian Open

For some, winning the Australian Open poses a uniquely difficult threat.

After all, the conditions created at the peak of the Melbourne summer are enough to stifle even the fittest athletes.

However, it is unlikely to be physical factors that are preventing Alcaraz from succeeding at this major.

There are no surfaces or conditions present that have ever stopped Alcaraz, who has won on all three surfaces, in blistering heat, indoors, and even whilst injured.

Carlos Alcaraz would be the greatest youngster ever if he won the 2026 Australian Open – change my mind…

“Having that record of being the youngest player to complete the Calendar Grand Slam, it is something that sticks in my mind.”

Jannik Sinner will naturally pose his biggest threat in Australia this year, but he has even managed to beat his great rival on hard courts too. 2026 marks his best opportunity yet to finally secure the only Grand Slam that continues to elude him.
