Carlos Alcaraz gave his fans an almighty scare over the weekend as injury marred his Barcelona Open final defeat to Holger Rune.

The Spaniard came through the door in typically brilliant fashion, beating Ethan Quinn, Laslo Djere, Alex de Minaur and Arthur Fils to set up a second straight final berth on the ATP Tour.

However, it wasn’t to be against Rune, who roared back to form with a dominant victory in the final, winning 7-6, 6-2, with Alcaraz needing to leave the court for treatment after the opening set.

With another Spanish event on the horizon this week in the form of the Madrid Open and Alcaraz will want to give a good account of himself ahead of the French Open, which is also coming up on the horizon.

Carlos Alcaraz drops hint over Madrid Open participation

The 21-year-old is going to be bidding to defend his title at Roland Garros and the hope will be that he can stay injury-free ahead of the tournament and give his defence maximum effort.

Given the injury concerns from Barcelona, it was intriguing how Alcaraz would feel going into the tournament in Spain’s capital and now he’s dropped a hint on social media that he’s ready to play.

A picture was posted on Instagram that claimed: “Team @CarlitosAlcarazz is ready for Mutua Madrid”, with a reminder that the Netflix series on Alcaraz gets underway on that platform tomorrow.

As of yet, Alcaraz doesn’t know who his opponent will be in Madrid but it would appear that the preparations are going well and he’s ready to rock and roll when the tournament gets underway on Friday.

Alcaraz looking for hat-trick of Madrid Open wins

The young sensation will be looking to go and get the third title at the Madrid Open after winning in 2022 and 2023.

Alcaraz is so often compared to Rafael Nadal and he managed to win the Madrid Open a staggering five times during his career, with the new kid on the block likely keen to emulate the legendary player.

It’s hard to imagine that Alcaraz’s injury is too bad, given that he’s back on the practice court with his team ahead of this tournament and this is definitely a positive ahead of a busy few weeks.

Any tennis tournament is better with Alcaraz part of it and the two-time Wimbledon winner won’t want to let his fans down and miss out on a tournament that clearly means a lot to him.
