Arthur Fils endured a very disappointing run at the Italian Open after he was forced to retire hurt in his opening match.

Fils met qualifier Andrea Pellegrino in the second round of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Rome, where he quickly fell 0-4 in the first set.

But the Frenchman was experiencing discomfort in his hip, to the point that he could no longer continue at the Italian Open.

Fortunately Fils has now issued a positive update on the issue, which has prompted a message from former player Boris Becker.

Can any of these four players stop Jannik Sinner winning the French Open this year?

Is there anyone else you think could be a threat to Sinner?

Fils posted on X: “Felt something during the match in Rome.

“I ran all the tests with the team and everything is clear.

“Already back to work for Paris.

“Thanks for the messages.”

Responding to the post, Becker commented: “Get some rest and fully recover for RG! Time is on your side.”

Fils’ withdrawal will have concerned French fans, but the latest update is certainly welcome news as the French Open nears.

The talented 21-year-old has a 22-7 record for the 2026 season, which includes a title-winning run in Barcelona.

Becker has also been keeping tabs on Jannik Sinner at the Italian Open, with the top seed having just secured a spot in the round of 16.

Sinner now meets compatriot Pellegrino in Rome, having just secured his 30th successive ATP Masters 1000 win.

The figure places him one ahead of Roger Federer on the all-time list, and one behind Novak Djokovic, with Becker saying of the feat on X: “Pretty good company… and still going strong!”

Sinner is now closing in on Djokovic at the summit, although he has just emulated the Serbian in Rome, becoming only the second man to win his first 25 ATP Masters 1000 matches of the season.

Another of the legendary figure’s career records is also up for grabs this week, with Sinner looking to match Djokovic again by completing the career Golden Masters, which involves winning all nine events.
