Boris Becker explained how playing at Wimbledon can help boost Novak Djokovic’s preparation for the Olympic Games.

The Serbian will head to Paris aiming to capture a gold medal at the prestigious event, which is the one prize that has eluded him throughout his illustrious career.

The World number two has not played on clay since tearing his meniscus at the French Open in June.

He will return to the same venue where he suffered the injury to try and become Olympic champion for the first time, and Becker thinks playing on grass has done Djokovic a massive favour.

How does Boris Becker think Novak Djokovic playing at Wimbledon helps his Olympic bid?

Djokovic is not entering an Olympics campaign exactly as he would like given he had knee surgery over six weeks ago.

Though Djokovic was relatively untroubled by the injury at Wimbledon, it is still a cause for concern for the 24-time Grand Slam champion.

But the fact that Djokovic played Wimbledon and reached the final is encouraging for Becker and he was pleased that the player he once coached was able to test his knee in top level matches before the Olympics.

“He got injured at the French Open and had a small surgery, so to make the final at Wimbledon was close to a miracle,” Becker said.

“For him, it was vital to come back as quickly as possible as he has said all year that the Olympics in Paris will be one of his big focuses for this year.

“What he did at Wimbledon was great because it meant he had competition, he had matches. He was able to test his knee in match-like conditions and that is the best thing that could have happened to him.”

Boris Becker thinks Novak Djokovic will be the top contender at the Paris Olympics

In what has been a difficult season in which he was yet to win a title, Djokovic lost the World number one ranking to Jannik Sinner.

With the Italian and the four-time Grand Slam winner Carlos Alcaraz leading the way with the titles they’ve won this year, Djokovic has more work to do to try and defeat these players on the biggest stage.

But after witnessing his run to the Wimbledon final despite being less than 100% fit, Becker thinks Djokovic has what it takes to win Olympic gold in the French capital.

“There is enough time between Wimbledon on grass and the first round of the Olympics in Paris on clay for him to adapt and he will know what to do now,” Becker added. “Wimbledon was important for him to ensure he is one of the favourites for Paris.”
