Jannik Sinner has his sights set on a historic feat at the Madrid Open and is now the overwhelming favourite to win the tournament.

Following the withdrawals of Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic, Sinner is now in pole position to become the first player ever to win five consecutive Masters titles without missing any on the calendar.

Novak Djokovic won five straight between 2014 and 2015, but was absent for the Madrid Open during his run.

Sinner has triumphed in Paris, Indian Wells, Miami and Monte-Carlo, dropping just one set throughout all four events.

Now, he’s looking to make it five in the Spanish capital, and tennis legend Boris Becker thinks he’s more than capable of doing so.

Boris Becker reacts to Jannik Sinner’s current form on the ATP Tour

As per TNT Sports, Becker said: “Sinner is playing his best tennis right now. I haven’t seen him ever as strong as currently.

“Winning the Sunshine Double and then going back to Europe on clay, winning Monte Carlo and pretty much not losing a set is unbelievable.

“So he’s in top form, and I think, yes, it’s possible for him to win in Madrid as well, especially since Alcaraz is out.

“That’s a pity for the tournament. But it reminds me of last year when Alcaraz also couldn’t play in Madrid and then went on to win Rome and Paris.”

“So I wouldn’t overestimate the injury, but I’m sure he wanted to play. But Sinner is from a different planet.”

Jannik Sinner’s struggles at the Madrid Open over the years

The Madrid Open is the ATP Masters 1000 event Sinner has struggled at the most over the years, having only gone as far as the quarterfinals there.

He made his Madrid debut in 2021, where he suffered a second-round exit to qualifier Alexei Popyrin in straight sets.

Sinner went one round further in 2022, but this time was handed a heavy 6-1, 6-2 defeat by Felix Auger-Aliassime.

His best and most recent campaign at the Madrid Open came in 2024, when he advanced to the last eight before being forced to withdraw from the tournament due to injury.

Last year, Sinner did not feature at the Madrid Open due to his three-month suspension from the sport.
