Boris Becker is the latest to provide his thoughts on Novak Djokovic’s potential retirement.

There has been plenty of speculation about when this legendary figure might hang up his racket, and despite the mounting questions, his position has remained unchanged.

The Serbian is still eyeing a 2028 retirement at the LA Olympics.

However, despite that admission, some remain sceptical, wondering whether he will be content being consistently beaten by Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner across that period.

It almost feels like some are calling time on his career for him. This has prompted Becker to step in.

Speaking to The Guardian earlier this week, Becker gave a lengthy, revealing interview where he spoke about some of the toughest periods of his life.

He began by recounting his time spent in jail, but attention eventually had to turn to Novak Djokovic.

The German spent three hugely successful years coaching the 24-time Grand Slam champion, helping him to win six of those great honours as well as 14 Masters 1000 titles.

Asked about his potential retirement, Becker was staunch in his stance on the matter.

He admitted: “Look, I think he’s important for tennis today. He leads by example and shows the young players the amount of dedication you need to come to the top and then stay on top. He’s still chasing his 25th grand slam and reached all four major semi-finals this year and won two tournaments. Who are we to challenge Novak when to stop? I heard the other day that he wants to play at the Olympics in LA 2028. Let him. We need him.

“Whoever was playing against Novak Djokovic lost a lot of money for the last 20 years. So I’d never bet against Novak.”

Despite his claims, Djokovic has been told that he should retire at the Australian Open, given that it remains the most successful tournament of his career.

What has Novak Djokovic said about the 2028 LA Olympics?

Speaking after winning his 101st ATP Title in Athens earlier this month, Djokovic was frank when discussing his potential retirement.

And, as Becker touches upon, the 2028 LA Olympics still very much remain his goal.

He claimed: “Since I’ve achieved absolutely all possible goals, I said about the 2028 Olympics because I wanted to play for so many more years.

“So maybe ending up at the Olympic Games with the Serbian flag, that would be nice.”

It remains to be seen whether the 38-year-old, who would have entered his 40s by the time that event rolls around, will stay true to that hopeful goal.
