Boris Becker did not hold back when responding to controversial suggestions to rule changes.

The six-time Grand Slam champion was a force of nature on the court throughout his career and this is also the case off the court.

The German is not afraid to speak his mind, as his war of words with Australia’s Nick Kyrgios illustrates.

Boris Becker once again proved this to be the case when he reacted to one of football’s biggest names suggesting some alterations to the game he loves and has given so much to.

Boris Becker responds to Gerard Pique’s suggested changes to tennis

There are several big names in other sports who have expressed their interest in tennis.

But now one of the best central defenders of his generation Gerard Pique has suggested two radical changes to professional tennis.

“Why are there two serves? That’s another 30 seconds making the ball bounce. People want to see the point,” the former Barcelona player said during a YouTube interview with former teammate Iker Casillas.

“People don’t want to see a five-minute game that stays indefinitely at 40-40, advantage, etc. Let’s set a decisive point.”

This was met with backlash from some fans, and now Becker was chimed in and shared his brutally honest opinion of Pique’s comments.

“A very good footballer shouldn’t be discussing the future of tennis, with all respect, Gerard Pique,” the three-time Wimbledon champion tweeted.

What are some changes to tennis that have been made in recent years?

Pique wants to see each game decided by the next point after the score goes to 40-40 rather than going to ‘advantage’, across the board.

While this rule is not in operation in singles, it is used in doubles tournaments both in ATP Tour and WTA Tour events.

In the NextGen ATP Finals, sets are played up to four games, and the US Open has changed the mixed doubles format and it will be played in what is known as ‘Fan Week’ at the 2025 edition of the event.

It is usually held alongside the men and women’s singles and doubles events when the main draw commences, but now the mixed doubles competition will commence the week prior.

Furthermore, the size of the field will decrease from 32 to 16 teams, and during the first three rounds, teams will need to win up to four games to win a set, while the final will be played with regular sets.
