Bianca Andreescu explained what went wrong with her tennis after making her comeback at the French Open.
The Canadian had not played since August 2023 due to a stress fracture in her back, but she made a winning return at Roland Garros.
It has been a difficult journey for the 23-year-old, who has suffered multiple injuries since beating Serena Williams to win her maiden Grand Slam at the 2019 US Open.
Now she is back, Andreescu not only has the challenge of staying fit, but rediscovering the form that made her one of the tour’s most dangerous players.
Bianca Andreescu highlights what she needs to change in her game
Following her first victory in almost ten months, Andreescu commented on the form and mindset she had in 2019.
In that year she captured the US Open as well as the Toronto and Indian Wells titles, all while she was still a teenager. She wants to channel that mentality and form again, which believes she lost in recent years.
Explaining how that may have occurred, Andreescu told the media: “I do want to more (tap into) the mentality that I had going into 2019. It was super fearless, very competitive.
“I fought for everything, doesn’t matter if I was down 5-0 or I was up 5-0, it was always the same mindset. I feel like that’s what I kind of lost over the years, and I have no idea why or how. But just getting into that mentality, the groove of 2019, is kind of the only thing I look at (comparatively).”

Bianca Andreescu reaches the second round of Roland Garros?
Many wondered how Andreescu would perform and if she would show any rust after being out of action since last summer. But the former World number four claimed a solid straight-sets victory over Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo.
She prevailed in a back-and-forth first set before cruising through the second to book her spot in the next round after 94 minutes.
“I am putting in the work,” Andreescu said after her 7-5, 6-1 win. “[After] four months, I would hope that I’d see some improvement on the court. I’m happy. I don’t want to focus on anything negative.
“I feel that today really showed all the work that I’ve been putting in practice. I feel it was a great first round. I feel that I have some rhythm going into the second round.”
She faces a tricky match against Australian Open quarter-finalist Anna Kalinskaya in round two, who took out home favourite Carla Burel in round one.
