Ben Shelton and Carlos Alcaraz are two of the biggest ATP stars at the US Open this year.

Both Shelton and Alcaraz have reached the third round of the US Open in comfortable fashion and have failed to drop a set.

This is something that the American will likely be pleased about, as Shelton looks to close the gap on Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.

Shelton has been told he still needs to learn from Alcaraz, and has now revealed how he actually feels about the five-time Grand Slam champion.

After Shelton won the Canadian Open, he has continued his good form into the US Open after beating Pablo Carreno Busta, 6-4 6-2 6-4.

In his post-match press conference, the world number six was asked about many topics, including Shelton commenting on the incident between Taylor Townsend and Jelena Ostapenko.

One of the other questions concerned Alcaraz, with Shelton heaping praise on the Spaniard and calling him ‘the most exciting thing in tennis’.

“I think he is probably the most exciting thing in tennis right now,” said Shelton. “The way he plays and the way he interacts with the crowd, he lights up the court.

“His smile, he is enjoying himself out there when he’s having fun. He is so dangerous from any position in the court. He is unpredictable and he is a lot of fun to watch, 100%. I am 100% sure that the fans here in NYC are loving it.”

When could Ben Shelton play Carlos Alcaraz at the US Open this year?

Given their credentials and recent form, Alcaraz and Shelton are thought to be two of the biggest contenders for the US Open title this year.

However, only one of them can reach the semifinals this year, as they are potential quarterfinal opponents for one another.

This may be something that Shelton will want to avoid, as he has lost all three of his previous encounters with Alcaraz.

Their most recent meeting came at Roland Garros, where Alcaraz beat Shelton in four sets en route to winning the title.

Before they can even think about that potential quarterfinal, Shelton and Alcaraz have two more matches to win.

Next for Shelton is Adrian Mannarino, who he recently beat at the Canadian Open, while Alcaraz faces 32nd seed Luciano Darderi.
