Ben Shelton played only two matches at the Acapulco Open after losing in the second round to David Goffin.
Shelton beat Flavio Cobolli in the first round in Mexico, having lost his two previous meetings to the young Italian.
However, it was actually a more experienced player in Goffin that ended Shelton’s run at the Acapulco Open.
Shelton reached the Australian Open semi-finals in January, but has only won two of his five matches on the ATP Tour so far in 2025.
Despite this, the American has still managed to climb up the rankings this week to a new career-high.

Ben Shelton achieves new career high ranking despite early Acapulco Open exit
Last year, Shelton reached the quarter-finals of the Acapulco Open and has dropped 50 points in the latest ATP rankings update.
However, the 22-year-old has dropped less points than Holger Rune (150) and Jack Draper (190).
As a result, Shelton has subsequently been able to reach a career-high ranking of world number 12.
Shelton is currently 455 points behind Alex de Minaur, who is currently sitting in 10th spot in the ATP rankings.
Coming up next for Shelton is Indian Wells, where he has already been spotted practising ahead of the first ATP Masters 1000 event of the year.
Last year, Shelton lost to Jannik Sinner in the fourth round of Indian Wells, which is his best result at the tournament so far.
The conditions are expected to be quicker at the tournament this year, with Indian Wells changing the surface of the courts.
Stefanos Tsitsipas moves back inside the top 10 with Dubai victory
Shelton is not the only player inside the ATP top 100 to reach a career-high ranking, with the eventual Acapulco Open champion also being rewarded.
After winning his first career title, promising talent Tomas Machac has been able to break inside the world’s top 20.
| Top 100 Player | New Career-high ranking |
| Ben Shelton | 12 |
| Tomas Machac | 20 |
| Brandon Nakashima | 32 |
| Alex Michelsen | 33 |
| Zizou Bergs | 53 |
| Quentin Halys | 59 |
| Camilo Ugo Carabelli | 61 |
| Francisco Comesana | 66 |
| Luca Nardi | 67 |
| Learner Tien | 68 |
| Raphael Collignon | 92 |
While not at a career-high ranking, Dubai champion Stefanos Tsitsipas has been able to move back inside the top 10 for the first time since May last year.
The other main ATP Tour champion of the week is Laslo Djere, who has climbed an impressive 29 places to world number 74 after winning his first title since 2020 in Santiago.
It has not been a positive week for everyone, with Alexander Bublik dropping down 31 places to world number 82, which is his lowest ranking in over five years.
