The full main draw for the first round of the 2025 Australian Open has been confirmed, including who Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka will face to start their title defences.
WTA world No1 Sabalenka has returned to Melbourne as the Belarusian searches for a third Australian Open women’s singles title in a row. Sabalenka successfully retained her crown in 2024 in a 6-3, 6-2 win vs Qinwen Zheng after beating Elena Rybakina 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in 2023.
No female tennis player has won three Australian Open singles titles in as many events since Martina Hingis excelled during 1997, 1998 and 1999. Jennifer Capriati (2001, 2002), Victoria Azarenka (2012, 2013) and Serena Williams (2009, 2010) also won back-to-back titles since.

ATP world No1 Sinner also returns to Melbourne Park as a champion after winning his debut Grand Slam title a year ago. Sinner beat Daniil Medvedev to win the 2024 Australian Open in a 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 comeback to also become Italy’s first-ever champion Down Under.

Sinner will now strive to go back-to-back in Melbourne Park and also be the first male player to defend the singles title since Novak Djokovic secured the ninth of his record 10 Australian Open titles to date in 2020. Djokovic won his most recent Australian Open title in 2023, too.
So, with that in mind, The Tennis Gazette covers the full main draw for the first round of the 2025 Australian Open men’s and women’s titles including who awaits Sabalenka and Sinner.

Jannik Sinner will start his Australian Open title defence against Nicolas Jarry
The Australian Open has drawn Sinner to start his men’s singles title defence against Nicolas Jarry in the first round of the 2025 tournament. It is only the third time that the pair have to date met in a competitive contest, with Sinner and Jarry both recording one win each so far.
Sinner will enjoy a slight advantage in his 2025 Australian Open first-round match with Jarry having taking his previous win over the Chilean on an outdoor hard court at the China Open in Beijing in September. Jarry beat Sinner on a grass court at the Libema Open back in 2019.

Aryna Sabalenka will start her Australian Open title defence against Sloane Stephens
Defending Australian Open women’s singles champion Sabalenka will likely feel confident of her chances of making the second round in 2025 after being drawn to face Sloane Stephens in the first round. The Belarusian has beaten the American in each of their four prior games.
Sabalenka and Stephens last met at the 2023 French Open when the former took a 7-6, 6-4 win in the Round of 16 at Roland Garros. It was also Sabalenka’s first and so far sole straight-sets win over Stephens having played three-set contests in all of their first three encounters.
