Injuries can often have a huge impact on a tennis player’s season and sometimes sees them miss weeks to months of action.

One player who has particularly struggled this year is Taylor Fritz, who withdrew from the BMW Open due to an ongoing abdominal injury.

Fritz is one of a number of withdrawals from the Munich tournament, with Matteo Berrettini, Jiri Lehecka, Gael Monfils and Alejandro Tabilo also pulling out.

However, one player who has a very clear injury concern has decided to play the ATP tournament.

Ugo Humbert won a match at the BMW Open with a broken finger

World number 21 Ugo Humbert was spotted coming onto court at the Monte Carlo Masters with heavy strapping on his hand, as he lost in the first round to Alexei Popyrin.

However, the Frenchman has been able to return to winning ways at the BMW Open, coming from a set down to beat Nicolas Jarry in his first round match.

Humbert has now explained the severity of his injury, revealing that he fell over at a recent Ultimate Tennis Showdown (UTS) event in Nimes, France.

Although he revealed that it hurt a lot of the time, Humbert has been enabled due to the clay courts putting less pressure on his injury.

“I have a fracture of the fifth metacarpal,” said Humbert. “I was in the hotel room, I slipped, I fell, I landed badly on the nightstand and I heard a huge crack. It was Saturday, at UTS, just after the match against Gael.

“Yes, it hurt a lot. I have to keep the splint on for three or four weeks, and I’ll be sore for a few months. Luckily it’s clay, because on hard courts, I wouldn’t be able to play.

“This gives me more time to shift with my forehand. I have to play completely differently; I have to get back in front. This match will help me for the next ones.”

Ugo Humbert’s Potential run to the BMW Open title

Although Humbert may be hampered by his injury, he still has the opportunity to win his first ever ATP clay court title in Munich.

One seed has already exited his section, after Denis Shapovalov retired against 17-year-old Diego Dedura-Palermo, who has been criticized for what he did in Munich.

Some of the other threats in the draw include top seed Alexander Zverev, who is looking to return to form, Ben Shelton and Francisco Cerundolo.
