Arthur Fils lost to Carlos Alcaraz 6-2, 6-1 in a 50-minute Qatar Open final.

The match was over in the blink of an eye, as Fils failed to deliver a performance that could even begin to challenge the world number one.

He was visibly frustrated at times and smashed his racket when Alcaraz secured the double break in the second set.

“Thank you very much. It’s been eight long months with my injury; it’s been a long time.

“So I guess, in a time like this, you just have to think about the last eight months where I was struggling, not playing tennis.

“I just want to thank my team, sorry guys, today was not my day, but I think we did a hell of a job, ok.”

‘Today’ certainly wasn’t Fils’ day, as he lost the quickest final of 2026 so far.

Fils was poor, but in his defence, he was playing the world number one.

The Frenchman was full of praise for Alcaraz after the final.

“You played very good and made a hell of a job, man, it’s a joke,” said Fils.

“So congrats to your team, to you, I wish you many more and keep going like this, you make an unbelievable job.

Fils plans to return in 2027, but what’s next for the 21-year-old in 2026?

Arthur Fils continues comeback in Dubai

The world number 40 will now head over to the UAE for the Dubai Tennis Championships.

Fils has been given a tricky draw in Dubai, with Jiri Lehecka, the number-eight seed, awaiting him in the first round.

Even if he were to beat Lehecka in his opener, he’d face another tough opponent, Denis Shapovalov, in the second round.

He may then have to beat the top three seeds, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Daniil Medvedev, and Alexander Bublik in consecutive matches.

Having already played five matches this week, it’s going to take some effort for Fils to reach another final in Dubai.

Of course, he may choose not to play the tournament.

Withdrawing from an event in the hours after losing a final isn’t uncommon.

Whatever he decides to do, it’s good to see Fils back on tour after spending so long on the sidelines.
