Arthur Fils has well and truly reintroduced himself on the ATP Tour this year after making a comeback from his back injury earlier this year.

Fils made his return to action in Montpellier in February, after being sidelined for six months following a stress fracture he sustained at the 2025 French Open.

The Frenchman showed no signs of regression in his first match back, and quickly found form at the Qatar Open, where he made the final.

After deep runs in Indian Wells and Miami, Fils captured his fourth career title at the Barcelona Open, beating Andrey Rublev in the final to hoist his first tour-level trophy since 2024.

With the triumph, the Barcelona champion is now closing in on a record nobody has managed to break since 1982.

Arthur Fils can break match Yannick Noah’s incredible record

According to Opta Ace, among French players, only Yannick Noah has claimed more clay-court ATP titles in the Open Era before turning 22 than Fils.

Noah, a former Roland Garros champion, secured five ATP titles prior to his 22nd birthday, clinching his fifth in South Orange, New Jersey, during the 1982 season.

Fils has three clay-court titles to his name, having emerged victorious in Lyon, Hamburg and now Barcelona.

Aged 21, Fils has surpassed compatriots Henri Leconte and Thierry Tulasne, who both recorded tallies of two.

Fils’ 22nd birthday is on the 12th of June, meaning he has just under two months to match or even surpass Noah’s record.

Clay-court tournaments before Arthur Fils’ 22nd birthday

Fils has four opportunities between now and his 22nd birthday to add to his clay-court title collection, the first of which comes in the form of the Madrid Open.

Seeded 21st at the Madrid Open, Fils will potentially have to battle past the likes of Ben Shelton, Lorenzo Musetti and Jannik Sinner in order to win the title, which would be his first Masters 1000 crown.

Following the conclusion of the Madrid Open, the Italian Open gets underway in Rome; the third and last clay-court Masters event of the season.

Then, Fils will have the chance to enter either the Hamburg Open, an ATP 500, or the Geneva Open, an ATP 250, where Novak Djokovic is the defending champion.

Fils’ last chance to close in on Noah’s record comes at Roland Garros, which ends on the 7th of June, just five days before he turns 22.
