Emma Raducanu is once again in the headlines, as the media seek to come down on her for her latest decision.

Having been under the microscope ever since her shocking US Open win in 2021, it has been tough for the injury-prone starlet to live up to such lofty expectations.

Especially given her fitness woes, which have actually provoked this latest controversial move.

BBC pundit left stunned by Emma Raducanu decision

Speaking to the BBC just yesterday, pundit Annabel Croft was left rather shocked by what she had heard about her compatriot.

With Raducanu turning down the opportunity to go to the Olympics with Great Britain, criticism has poured in from those questioning her loyalty to her country.

She has sought to defend herself, but it will not help to see one media personality further question the move despite the obvious injury concerns that have provoked it.

Croft claimed: ‘I have to be honest, I was very surprised to hear that she didn’t want to go there. Every player knows their own mind at the time, so she has obviously given it a huge amount of consideration and decided that to go from grass to clay and then you look at the back end beyond that, and it’s hard courts at the US Open.

‘But I just hope she doesn’t regret it. I’m sure she will have many opportunities in the future but you never know. Because her body has broken down quite a few times already, it’s hard to believe she has already had wrist and ankle surgeries and it’s been preventing her from gaining any momentum with her game.

‘All I know is that any player who has ever gone to the Olympics has had the most wonderful experience and they enjoy so much going to watch other athletes in other sports and it’s kind of a once-in-a-lifetime experience.’

Emma Raducanu has to prioritise her fitness

After the injuries that Raducanu has sustained at such a young age, which would have been enough to retire plenty of players, it’s fair to say that the 2021 US Open champion has every right to prioritise her fitness this year.

Especially given how dangerous jumping from surface to surface can be, with the clay court season just finishing, thus kickstarting the grass-court season. So, to move back to clay just before returning to hard courts… It’s something that is worrying plenty of the professionals.

Throughout a torrid 2023, Raducanu underwent surgery on both wrists and her ankle.

So, despite a few spirited performances, it feels like this year is more about getting through it in one piece than challenging for titles and climbing the world rankings.

Her ceiling is huge, and having already won a Grand Slam title at her age, her pedigree remains high.

This will not be her last chance to play at an Olympics, so whilst she remains in this transformative, regenerative stage of her career, this is a wise choice, even if it has drawn some scrutiny.
