Reilly Opelka is certainly one of the more outspoken players on the ATP Tour, with the American among those sharing their verdicts on the upcoming US Open mixed doubles.

US Open mixed doubles will take place in opening week, the same stage as singles qualifying, in a bid to attract high-profile singles players.

Alex de Minaur wants to play US Open mixed doubles, with the event at Flushing Meadows also changed from 32 pairs to 16.

Aryna Sabalenka is another who could take part in the event at the US Open, as well as Stefanos Tsitsipas and Paula Badosa.

But Opelka is strongly against the mere idea of doubles, believing it is for failed singles players and calling for it to be removed.

Andy Roddick likes outspoken Reilly Opelka after US Open mixed doubles claim

His compatriot Andy Roddick has now reacted to that verdict, with the former world number one then essentially calling for a doubles overhaul.

“Reilly Opelka love him or hate him, you rarely have to wonder what he is thinking and he is certainly not scared to tell you what he is thinking,” he said on the Served with Andy Roddick podcast.

“So regardless of whether you agree with his opinion, I kind of like characters like Reilly who will just say what they think. I disagree with him on some of the stuff he says but you don’t have to wonder what he is thinking.”

A $1million prize will also be included at the upcoming event in New York, with eight teams earning direct entry with their combined singles rankings.

The remaining teams will then be given wildcards, with many regular mixed doubles pairings left very frustrated and disappointed with the changes.

Continuing his thoughts on the matter, Roddick noted: “It’s not as if I don’t feel bad. Some of my best friends in the world [are doubles players].

“But the arguments have to be based on fact or a new idea. You can’t just use vague terms like we are not promoted.

“It’s an old product which everyone knows about which nobody watches. If there is an innovative thing like the mixed doubles.

“I don’t know if it will work but it’s something different to try and opposed to just letting something bleed out.”

Journalist Jon Wertheim added: “A former player put it to me like this the other day, I like this. He said I don’t want Rohan Bopanna to be out of a job.

“I want the next Rohan Bopanna to be out of a job. We need to stop this pathway of players joining the tour with no ambitions of playing singles.”
