Andy Roddick saw something ‘absurd’ happen in the locker room before Carlos Alcaraz’s US Open final win

Carlos Alcaraz picked up his second US Open title in 2025, taking his Grand Slam tally to six.

For the third time this year, Alcaraz met his biggest rival, Jannik Sinner, in a major final.

The pair were level at 1-1 heading into the US Open, following Alcaraz’s win at Roland Garros and Sinner’s win at Wimbledon.

Winning the third match of their Grand Slam trilogy, Alcaraz defeated Sinner in four sets to clinch the title.

Reacting to Alcaraz’s latest major victory, former world number one Andy Roddick shared what he saw happen in the locker room before the final.

During the latest episode of ‘Served with Andy Roddick’, Roddick recalled his interaction with Alcaraz in the lead-up to the final.

“I was walking into the training room, and Carlos [Alcaraz] was in there early, and he was like, ‘Hey man, what’s up? How is it going?” said Roddick.

“I literally looked at him and made a joke like ‘what are you doing today?’

“He was so relaxed! It was weird. You can tell when you go into a training room and someone is playing and they are like ‘good morning’ [and put their head down], it’s like let’s get out of here.”

Alcaraz was open to chat with Roddick and a whole host of tennis legends who walked into the room.

“Every has been that has walked into a locker room, you have to be differential to the energy that whoever is going to do the work is creating,” said Roddick.

“It was so inviting. It’s three or four hours before the match and [Ivan] Lendl was in there bulls——. Mac [John McEnroe] was in there, [Juan Carlos] Ferrero was in there. It was a 15-minute chat.

“Carlos was in there, and I would not have been able to tell you who had a match. It was absurd.”

Alcaraz certainly seemed focused in the final, as he produced one of the finest displays of his tennis career to clinch his sixth major title.

The Spaniard has now won six titles in the 2020s, closing the gap to Serbian legend Novak Djokovic.

He’ll be hoping to win his seventh when he returns to Grand Slam action at the Australian Open in January, the one major he has yet to win.

Carlos Alcaraz’s record at the Australian Open

The Spanish star has now won three of the four Grand Slams on multiple occasions, but has never held the Australian Open trophy.

In his four visits to Melbourne, Alcaraz hasn’t once reached the semifinals, suffering quarterfinal defeats in 2023 and 2024.

Alcaraz looked set to qualify for his maiden semifinal earlier this year, when he made a fast start in the quarters against Djokovic.

Leading by a set to love against the then 37-year-old, it seemed unlikely that Djokovic would mount a comeback.

Proving the doubters wrong as he so often does, Djokovic fought back to defeat Alcaraz in four sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4.

Only time will tell if Alcaraz can make a proper run at the title in 2026, but you certainly won’t want to miss any of the action.

The 2026 Australian Open is scheduled to begin on Monday, January 12.
