Novak Djokovic, despite having failed to win a Grand Slam title, has arguably enjoyed the best season of his career.

After all, even if he only has an Olympic gold medal to his name, it marks the sole title that he lacked going into 2024, which he now owns.

The 37-year-old has officially completed tennis, but will have grand ambitions of winning Grand Slam number 25 to truly cement his place at the top of tennis.

To do so, Novak Djokovic will certainly have to lock in after an enjoyable and easy-going start to life back in New York.

Speaking on Served with Andy Roddick, the man after whom the podcast is named retold a story of how he shared the locker room with Djokovic during the recent US Open Fan Week.

Ahead of the actual competition, which commenced today, the two participated in a host of good-natured and hilarious clashes across New York in order to ramp up anticipation.

Now recalling how fun it was behind the scenes as well as on the court, Andy Roddick revealed: ‘Novak was telling us, it was Mac, me and him sitting there. He was telling us… Mac mentioned to us, that square in Serbia where like 120-130 thousand people gather and it just goes crazy. I was talking about after Paris I saw Jayson Tatum out one night, we had fun.

‘And I said yeah, I’ll get in trouble with your [Novak] fans for this, I made the comment that I think I’ve seen footage of you out more post-Olympics than I’ve seen footage of you in the last two decades. And he had a pretty good laugh about that.

‘He didn’t say it was inaccurate. He was in good spirits.’ 

Those good spirits have already been somewhat damaged though, after Novak Djokovic had to correct a journalist for what he said about him.

When does Novak Djokovic’s US Open campaign begin?

Admittedly, of the four top seeds, Djokovic boasts one of the kinder draws at the US Open this week.

He kickstarts his campaign later today against Moldovan veteran Radu Albot, in what is expected to be a comfortable win for the defending champion.

Following that, he is due to face one of Jan-Lennard Struff or Laslo Djere, as a couple of huge servers who would cause most players trouble.

Not the greatest returner in the history of the sport though.

The third round could see him face the Canadian Open champion Alexei Popyrin, before the real challenge begins in the fourth round, where Ben Shelton should await provided he can get past Frances Tiafoe.

With stars like Andrey Rublev, Casper Ruud, Alexander Zverev and Grigor Dimitrov all potential opponents for the following rounds, it will then take an almighty task to overcome one of Jannik Sinner or Carlos Alcaraz, should they get that far as expected.
