Andy Roddick reacts to claims that Daniil Medvedev should have been defaulted  for throwing his racquet at the Laver Cup

The Laver Cup has now concluded, and with it, Team Europe have wrestled back the title from Team World in dramatic fashion.

Going into the final day, the former had so much they needed to do with just four games potentially to be played.

Team World needed just two wins, whereas Team Europe needed three, and looking at the fixtures, it did not look good for Bjorn Borg’s side.

However, they emerged just when it was needed, with Carlos Alcaraz spearheading their triumph.

Speaking on Tennis Channel, Andy Roddick couldn’t help but react to the outstanding controversy that came out of the weekend’s action at the Laver Cup though.

And, it should surprise nobody that Daniil Medvedev was at the heart of it, with the Russian coming under some scrutiny for flinging his racket in the direction of the audience.

Fortunately, no one was hit, but some onlookers did call for his disqualification. Journalist Jose Morgado even wrote on X: ‘Only reason why Medvedev wasn’t defaulted was because this was Laver Cup…’.

But, Roddick has responded: ‘This is another one of those rules in tennis where, like you look at Novak when he got defaulted from the US Open, that was a fluke.

‘That was, in my opinion, way less intentional than what Daniil Medvedev did. He was swatting the ball back towards the tarp which you can do with no fault pretty much all the time. Novak didn’t hit it out of bounds, it just happened to hit someone and he hit it with a little more force. This was actually more intentional.

‘Listen, up is down, down is up, welcome to the rules of tennis.’

Naturally, Medvedev has been quite repentant upon reflection of the event, which was an ugly incident.

And, it could have been much worse had someone actually been sitting where the racket ended up, with the gap in the audience really fortuitous.

The 28-year-old has since reacted, noting: ‘I didn’t want to throw it the way I threw it. I mean, I didn’t want… I wanted to throw it, like, in one place, so it was horrible from me.

‘I got lucky. I didn’t touch anyone. When you don’t touch anyone in tennis, you don’t get a disqualification. So that’s it. I got, yeah, should not do it.’
