Andy Roddick had doubts about the Laver Cup but he now admits that he was wrong.
The team event began in 2017 and it sees a team of players from Europe and against a team of competitors from the rest of the world battle in singles and doubles matches over three days.
Each team is led by a captain who is a former player and the teams battle for bragging rights and the right to lift the Laver Cup trophy.
The tournament has offered up sights not previously seen before in tennis and it has created some of the memorable moments in recent history.
What did Andy Roddick say about the Laver Cup?
The Laver Cup takes place every September and it was the scene of Roger Federer’s last match when he played alongside Rafael Nadal in doubles.
While the event has provided some special moments, some fans have wondered how sustainable the event is. The 2003 US Open champion shared that concern but after attending the event in 2021, he has changed his mind.
“I was lucky enough that Roger invited me a couple of years ago, and it was great,” Roddick said on his ‘Served Podcast’. “The genius lies in that they started like what is the absolute best TV product that we can put out there for three days.
“We can control the doubles match ups, we can have Novak coaching Roger and vice versa, and Rafa talking to the young players.
“It seems like they got smart and we got smart in tennis and they figured out, pay everyone a lot of money, figure it out later and have faith in if you build it they will come.
“It’s been sustainable. I was completely wrong about it. I am a huge fan of it now. This is me telling you that formally I want to declare that you [John Isner] were right and I was wrong.”

Who will be the new Laver Cup captains?
Changes will soon be made at the Laver Cup as two new captains have been introduced from the 2025 event.
When the Laver Cup emanates from San Francisco in a year’s time, Andre Agassi will take over as the captain of Team World.
He will take the reins from John McEnroe, who captained Team World since the inaugural Laver Cup in Prague seven years ago. “I am truly honored to accept the invitation to become the Laver Cup Team World Captain,” Agassi said.
“I hope I can build the rapport, respect and trust with the players as John has done and I can’t wait to take on this role, it’s not one I’m taking lightly.”
Furthermore, 1983 French Open winner Yannick Noah will replace 11-time Grand Slam champion Bjorn Borg as the captain of Team Europe from 2025.
