A problem that has plagued tennis all year now, this Grand Slam is not safe from such officiating failure, and it’s alarming that even on the biggest stage these mistakes persist.
Being a chair umpire is not an easy job by any means, but as the game has evolved, so too has the technology that is there to help them.

There have been a ridiculous amount of umpire errors this season in tennis, but this one might just top them all.
Anna Kalinskaya hit a drop shot that sent Bella Haddad Maia bounding in towards the net, and at full speed, it looked like she had just about made it as the Russian whiffed her return.
But she was bemused, adamant that the ball had hit her opponent’s side of the court before coming onto her side.
Challenging the call, even those in the video review could not determine that, quite clearly, Haddad Maia’s shot had come off her racquet, hit her side of the court, and then travelled over, effectively bouncing the ball.
Kalinskaya was stunned, and so too was Andy Roddick, who took to X to write: ‘Us: There’s finally replay available for every situation. All right there to see. What could possibly go wrong?
‘Umpire: hold my beer.’

It’s so disheartening that this is just the latest in a long line of officiating disasters that have occurred throughout 2024.
Every time this happens, the integrity of the sport takes a fresh hit.

Tennis is a sport that is idolised for its integrity, and yet that reputation is set to slowly wane if these poor decisions continue.
Kalinskaya went on to lose that game, where she would have been on break point had she been rightly awarded the point, and eventually lost the match.
