Andy Murray recalled what he did wrong during the 2008 Wimbledon final between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

The British number one competed in an era where the likes of the Swiss Maestro, the Spaniard and their rival Novak Djokovic were at their very best.

The quartet contested some of the greatest matches in tennis history and raised the standard of the sport to new heights.

But while watching one particular contest that many regard as the greatest ever, Andy Murray made a decision that he now regrets.

Andy Murray recalls what he did during the 2008 Wimbledon final against Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer

The 2008 Wimbledon final was a historic encounter between two of the sport’s greatest players.

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal played one another in the championship match for the third consecutive year, and the World number one at the time was aiming for a record sixth successive title at SW19.

The pair produced a five-set classic that ended in near darkness due to two rain delays, and in one of them Murray, who was in the Centre Court crowd, decided to drive home, which is a decision he now regrets.

“I went to watch the Federer and Nadal Wimbledon final. The one that Nadal won. The unbelievable match. And I left the match because it started raining,” Murray said during an appearance on Chris Hoy’s ‘Sporting Misadventures’ podcast.

“I drove home, I lived in Wandsworth at the time which is 20 minutes away from Wimbledon, and I missed the end. I was watching it on TV. That was a stupid decision. I was in there watching it with one of my best friends.

“It was the Nadal-Federer match which was Nadal’s first Wimbledon that he won, when it basically finished in the dark.”

Did Andy Murray play at the 2008 Wimbledon Championships?

Murray was one of those who competed in the 2008 Wimbledon Championships.

He reached the quarter-finals for the first time, and that was his best result at a Grand Slam until he reached the US Open final later that season.

Murray began his 2008 Wimbledon run with straight set wins over Fabrice Santoro and Xavier Malisse, beating Tommy Haas in four sets to reach the fourth round.

The former World number one produced an epic comeback from two sets down to defeat France’s Richard Gasquet.

His campaign came to an end at the hands of the eventual champion Nadal, in what was the first of the pair’s three meetings at Wimbledon.
