Andrey Rublev tried his hand at mixed doubles in New York, joining the field for the new-look event.

Entering alongside Czechia’s Karolina Muchova, Rublev was looking to pick up his maiden Grand Slam title in the mixed doubles.

Winning their opening match in straight sets, Rublev and Muchova defeated Reilly Opelka and Venus Williams 4-2, 5-4.

Unfortunately, it was in the quarterfinals that their run came to an end, losing out to the defending champions Andrea Vavassori and Sara Errani, 1-4, 4-5.

Coming up short in the US Open mixed doubles quarterfinals, Rublev extended his unwanted Grand Slam record.

Andrey Rublev is now 0-11 in Grand Slam quarterfinals

Rublev has now lost his first 11 Grand Slam quarterfinals, a remarkably poor record for someone of his quality.

Playing his first Grand Slam quarterfinal in a discipline other than singles, Rublev may have fancied his chances of picking up a rare win, but it wasn’t to be.

Instead, the Russian now enters the singles competition with one of the worst records in Grand Slam quarterfinals the sport has ever seen.

It’s almost hard to believe that Rublev hasn’t reached a semifinal, having enjoyed as much success as he has elsewhere on the ATP Tour.

Rublev is the only active player with 15 or more titles to his name yet to win a Grand Slam quarterfinal.

Comparing Andrey Rublev’s record to other players with 15+ ATP titles

Just eight ‘active’ players in the men’s game have won more than 15 tour-level titles.

Rublev is a member of that elite group, but is the only player without a Grand Slam quarterfinal win to his name.

It’s clearly not a record Rublev wants, but why has he performed so poorly during the latter stages of Grand Slams?

Well, given his success at other ATP tournaments, you’d have to suggest the format plays a role.

Playing best-of-five set matches compared to best-of-three is a completely different game that requires a clear mind, capable of focusing for three or more hours.

Over the years, we’ve seen several instances where Rublev has struggled to keep his emotions in check, especially during longer matches.

There is also something to be said about the way Rublev plays tennis.

Hitting the ball as hard as he does, it’s difficult to maintain consistency for more than two or three sets at a time without the level dipping.

One of the biggest criticisms levelled at Rublev over the past few years has been his lack of variety, which could be contributing to this problem.

Whether he can improve that side of his game remains to be seen, but it will certainly be something to look out for in New York.

Andrey Rublev’s most heartbreaking Grand Slam quarterfinal defeat

Of his 11 Grand Slam quarterfinal defeats, one stands out as the most heartbreaking of them all.

Taking on Croatia’s Marin Cilic in the 2022 French Open quarterfinals, Rublev seemed like the favorite to advance, and started strongly, taking the first set 7-5.

However, his level soon dipped, as Cilic fired back to take the second and third sets 6-3, 6-4.

Keeping his French Open dreams alive, Rublev proceeded to win the fourth set 6-3, pushing Cilic all the way in Paris.

Battling to a tiebreaker, Rublev couldn’t handle the pressure, as he lost 2-10, suffering the fifth Grand Slam quarterfinal defeat of his career.

Proceeding to lose another six quarterfinals over the next three years, the Russian may well look back at his defeat to Cilic as a missed opportunity.

Only time will tell if he can win his first Grand Slam quarterfinal at the US Open when the singles tournament begins on Sunday, August 24.
