American tennis has really fluctuated across the last few decades, going from boasting some of the sport’s greatest players to struggling to have a player crack the top ten.

And whilst Coco Gauff now seems set to be a mainstay around the pinnacle of the women’s game, on the men’s side, there is no real standout.

Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul and Ben Shelton sit 12th, 13th and 14th respectively in the ATP rankings, and Frances Tiafoe has endured a torrid 2024 which has seen him completely drop off the pace.

However, whilst this rivalry remains within the US, they will hope it soon spurs them on to start enjoying greater success at the top of tennis rather than just their country.

Fortunately, things do seem to be moving in the right direction.

American players make history at Wimbledon

That is especially after all the third-round fixtures were concluded, and one interesting statistic was published by sports journalist Reem Abulleil.

Citing the United States Tennis Association, they reference how the American players in Wimbledon this year have already done something that has not been done since 2004.

This 20-year-old record regarded having this many US advancing to the second week in SW19, with the current crop of talent including the four aforementioned names, excluding Tiafoe, as well as Emma Navarro, Danielle Collins and Madison Keys.

For context, the group from 2004 was Serena Williams, Lindsay Davenport, Jennifer Capriati, Amy Frazier, Andy Roddick, Robby Ginepri and Vince Spadea.

Unfortunately, none of these would go on to win the tournament that year, with Roddick and Williams both losing in the finals to Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova respectively.

Hopefully, that is not a bad omen for this current crop of US tennis stars.

American tennis needs another Grand Slam winner

Whilst there is still some hope for a US Wimbledon winner this year, it does feel like the bulk of the country’s hopes will rest on performance at the end of summer when they all return for their home Grand Slam.

For the women, the last to win a Grand Slam was Gauff just last year. However, before that, you have to go back to 2020, when Sofia Kenin claimed the Australian Open.

However, for the men, it has been a horrendously long wait.

Roddick was their most recent success, with his 2003 US Open title remaining the last American man to taste Grand Slam success.

This is a country built on sporting excellence across the board, and that should be no different with tennis. Someone has to step up and end this hoodoo.
