Jannik Sinner is in the winner’s circle once again after he defeated Grigor Dimitrov to win the Miami Open. The Italian has been speaking afterwards about something that he’s extremely proud of.
Sinner is enjoying quite the start to 2024. He won his first Grand Slam by lifting the Australian Open. He defeated Daniil Medvedev in that final and he’s only actually lost one match in 2024 so far.
Carlos Alcaraz was the man who defeated him at Indian Wells as he won the tournament. Here in Miami, however, nobody had an answer to the quality of Sinner as he blew the field away.
Sinner thrashed Dimitrov 6-3, 6-1 on Sunday night to finally lift the Miami Open title after going close on two occasions previously. This was his moment and the Italian is moving on up in the world rankings.
Jannik Sinner eyes Novak Djokovic’s world number one title
In winning the Miami Open, Sinner is now up to number two in the world and is sandwiched between Djokovic and Alcaraz. With that in mind, he will now have his eyes on the top spot.
Djokovic has been the world number one since September 2023 on this occasion. In total, he’s got the record for the most number of weeks spent at the top spot with the Serb sitting top of the pile for 419 weeks in total.
Sinner now has his sights on the world number-one spot. One eager reporter thought he’d actually made the world number one spot but Sinner quickly corrected him and suggested he was proud of his achievements this year.
He told Miami Open Press: “No, for sure, it means a lot to me, but more importantly, it was a great performance for me, especially in the last two matches, which for me is more important.
“Being number two, it’s an amazing feeling. I never thought I’d come to this point. I come from a very normal family. My dad is still working, as is my mum too. For me, it’s you know, sport is one thing, and life is different.
“I’m very happy to be in this position. I’m just enjoying every moment. These are special days winning a tournament. It doesn’t matter what kind of tournament, it’s a special day. It means a lot to me.”
Sinner will win multiple major titles and rule the world
In tennis terms, it’s fair to say that Sinner is going to go on and become a seriously top player. He could enjoy many battles with Alcaraz and the pair could become the Federer and Nadal of the modern era.
Sinner seems to have a very humble attitude. In a sport as demanding as tennis that is sure to bode well as his career progresses to the next level.
The 22-year-old has a taste for success and right now he’s riding the crest of a wave. Winning has become second nature to him and it’s extremely exciting to see what he can achieve as the year progresses.
