Alexander Zverev has an honest reflection of his form after losing his opening match at the Monte Carlos Masters.

The German has struggled since losing to Jannik Sinner in January’s Australian Open final.

The 27-year-old was distraught after losing that match, and since then he has not been able to replicate the performances.

Zverev’s loss to Matteo Berrettini in Monte Carlo is his second opening round loss of the season, and he has plenty of work to do as the clay court season approaches.

Alexander Zverev explains the problem he has after Monte Carlo Masters defeat

Zverev faced a tricky opening match in Monte Carlo when he took on Matteo Berrettini.

The hard-hitting Italian is slowly returning to his best form and he showed what he is capable of when he took on the top seed.

The German took a commanding lead by winning the first set, but the 2021 Wimbledon runner-up bounced back and claimed the next two sets to book his spot in the next round. Zverev has now claimed just six match wins since reaching the Australian Open final.

Furthermore, he has been unable to make any ground on Sinner at the top of the rankings, who is serving a three-month suspension and has not played since beating Zverev in Australia.

Explaining the problem he might have, Zverev told reporters: “I have not won many matches. So it’s been the worst period since my injury last few months. It’s a matter that I’m losing.

“It’s as simple as that. You win one or two matches like this, there is no more questions, for me in my mind. But I lost three sets in Buenos Aires, I lost three sets in Rio, I lost three sets in Indian Wells, I lost three sets in Miami, I lost three sets here, and I didn’t win a single one. So that’s the matter.”

Alexander Zverev’s defeat and Jannik Sinner will return from suspension still the World number one

Zverev was arguably feeling the pressure as the ATP’s top ranked player with SInner unable to play due to his doping ban.

He had a golden opportunity to make ground on the Italian and perhaps even surpass him, but after winning just six of his 12 matches, he will remain number two.

Therefore, Sinner will return to the tour on May 4 at the Italian Open, and will sill be number one in the world.

In fact, Sinner will be the first Italian player to feature at the Italian Open as the ATP Tour’s World number one.
