Alexander Zverev reveals what happened during his match with Flavio Cobolli that he has ‘never experienced before’

Alexander Zverev booked his place in the semi-final of the Halle Open after defeating Flavio Cobolli in straight sets 6-4, 7-6.

After Zverev lost to Taylor Fritz in the final of the Stuttgart Open, the world number three continued his pursuit of a maiden grass-court title in Halle.

At the ATP 500 event, the German has now earned victories over Marcos Giron, Lorenzo Sonego, and Cobolli, dropping just one set throughout the tournament so far.

He managed to get over the line against the Italian in the quarter-final, but the match didn’t come without its challenges, which Zverev spoke about after the match.

In his post-match interview, Zverev said: “I felt fine before the match, then, all of a sudden I felt really, really bad, I felt ill. I went to throw up, and then 15 minutes later, I felt ok again.

“I don’t know what it was, but yeah, I have never experienced that before, to be honest.

“I hope I will be fine in the next couple of hours when the adrenaline settles, but yeah, after that, I think it was a pretty good match.”

On his semi-final opponent, Daniil Medvedev, he said: “I think he’s the guy that I played most in my career, so yeah, I’m looking forward to it.

“A lot of things have happened in the last 18 months [when they last played]. He’s one of my toughest opponents in my career. It’s going to be a great match and I’m really looking forward to facing him.”

Heading into their semi-final matchup at the Halle Open, Medvedev leads the head-to-head against Zverev 12-7.

The Russian has won six of their last seven matches, including their meeting in the semi-final of the Australian Open in 2024.

The last time Zverev won back-to-back matches against Medvedev was in 2018, when he made it 4-0 in the rivalry after overcoming the former world number one at the Canadian Open.

Their upcoming clash in Halle will be the first match between the two on grass, and their 20th overall.
