Alexander Zverev kept Germany’s Davis Cup dreams alive against Spain.

For the second time this week, a Jan-Lennard Struff defeat left Germany on the brink of a Davis Cup exit.

However, just as he did against Argentina, Zverev picked up the win in the second singles match to level the tie at 1-1.

The German doubles pair of Kevin Krawietz and Tim Putz will now take on Spain’s Marcel Granollers and Pedro Martinez, with the winners advancing to face Italy in the final.

Unfortunately for Germany, even if they do reach the final, it doesn’t sound like their star player will be 100% fit.

Alexander Zverev admits he’s ‘not feeling his best’ despite beating Jaume Munar

During his on-court interview, Zverev provided a concerning fitness update.

“Happy to get the win,” he said.

“I’m not feeling my best, so, was lacking energy a little bit yesterday and overnight, but happy to get the point for our team, and now we’re going into the doubles just like last time.”

Zverev’s serve bailed him out at times against Munar, even if he wasn’t firing on all cylinders from the word go.

“For sure, I didn’t serve well in the beginning, and then the longer the match went on, the better I started serving, especially in the important moments,” he said.

“Very happy with that performance.

“Again, it doesn’t matter who is winning as long as we as a team win.”

The German was then asked about how difficult it was to play Munar, someone who gets more balls back than most.

“Especially, the balls here, they’re very, very slow, so it’s tough to hit a winner, to win the point,” said Zverev.

Will you still be watching the Davis Cup without Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner this year?

“But at the end of the day, he’s a tough competitor, he had a great year, and I’m happy with the win.”

Picking up the win against Munar, Zverev notched his 11th singles victory at the Davis Cup.

Every Alexander Zverev Davis Cup win

Making his debut at the Davis Cup in 2016, Zverev has played 16 singles matches, winning 11 and losing five.

He didn’t make the strongest of starts in the competition, losing his first three matches across 2016 and 2017, but has found his form over recent years.

Zverev has won eight of his last nine, and would love nothing more than a chance to pick up another victory, should Germany reach the final.

If Zverev’s teammates were to do the job and send the side through to the championship match, he would likely meet either Matteo Berrettini or Flavio Cobolli in his singles match.

The world number three has a winning head-to-head record against both players…
